i've spent most of the last week struggling to breathe, or trying to sleep off intense headaches, so not a whole lot has gotten done. i did pull myself together enough to at least make an appearance at Bonnie's for Christmas, but i can't lie, it felt pretty good to cut out early and get back in bed when i got home.

since Kyu got sick about the same time i did, the plague coming from his parents and all, a lot of this week was spent taking turns looking after each other. i'm glad we're both doing better now, i'd forgotten how whiny he can be when he feels lousy.but i guess pots and kettles, glass houses and stones. whatever.

really, i think this week marks the beginning of my new effort, finding a job that won't shoot me straight back to the mental breakdown i've spent 3 years trying to get over. that's the goal though, new year, new job. actual productivity, and eventually, being able to afford to do fun things again! xD

i've more or less run out of things to do. like there's stuff i can do, and stuff i want to do, but i've never hit manic while happy before and i'm so peppy and excited that i'm exhausting myself before i manage to get much of anything done, then having trouble staying asleep, because i want to be DOING THINGS. i got through most of last week doing Christmas prep. i cleaned, set up the tree, and wrapped presents to or from anyone regularly in the apartment. i have nothing left to wrap and days to fill before Christmas itself arrives. this morning i have a few hours before mom picks me up for church with Jenni, then immediately after that i'm back home to get in the car and head to Grandpa's, so today's covered really. i have a painting i wanna do for James, but that's part of my Monday plan: painting, which still leaves me wondering what i'm gonna do to fill my Tuesday? like everything seems so interesting i don't know what to do first and i lost my whole weekend basically researching new ways to do things i already knew how to do, but can't afford to do.

honestly today all i'm figuring on accomplishing today is time with family. i have things packed to do in that time in my trusty Art Bag, but i really have no idea if i'll actually manage to get anything done.

but yeah, as someone whose struggled with depression most of their life, and manic/ (even worse) depressive mood swings on top of that, i have to say this is the first time a manic swing has hit when i wasn't feeling depressed. usually it kinda levels me and i feel normal-ish, but a little twitchy and anxious (and still kinda inexplicably sad) but this time i feel like i'm trying to go three ways at once and my ideas won't stay in my head, they're spilling everywhere. my inattention is of the hyper-focused variety, meaning i'm looking so hard at one tiny aspect of something for so long i miss basically everything else for hours, but MAN do i know the ins and outs of that one tiny thing. i'm also tired after being up for like 8 hours, and only managing sleep in 4-6 hour bursts, which means i'm not really rested so i'm also dealing with random muscle aches. it's really strange, i'm sure i'll figure it out though.

i kinda am. i've spent hours in the last few days on a website playing flash games designed for 12 year old girls, and looking at the teaser images to try and guess which dolls are coming next.

the line i'm obsessing over is Ever After High, it's a sister line to Monster High, for kids that prefer fairy tales to monsters, which is definitely more my thing. i've spent lots of the last month and something looking into it. basically instead of being the kids of movie monsters, they're the kids of fairy tale characters, destined to inherit their parent's roles in the stories to keep them going. initially i discovered it when i was looking into doing a custom MH doll to be a Princess Jupiter for myself, and really EAH is a way better fit for that project, but also i just really really love the characters. it only launched this July; the inital wave was four dolls, followed swiftly by a two-pack, then another two dolls. so that's eight widely available now, and the ninth has shown up a few hard-to-reach places but will likely be more available early next year, and the designs for the tenth have been confirmed, so now i'm hoping for one specific character (Lizzie Hearts) to come soon, since the other designs i really like have been confirmed or released already. Kyu ordered me Raven Queen for Christmas, and i'm hoping to find a way to get the others soonish, before the line explodes and there's too many to keep track of. xD

it warmed up considerably. the ice has melted and the streets are pretty much back to normal and that's awesome. xD today mom will be picking me up to head over and perform prelude music in Bonnie's ward. my favorite thing about Christmas is singing with my siblings, so while i'm hovering between nervous and terrified, i'm trying to view it as a learning experience. i'm making it part of my re-normalization project.

really the hardest part is that i usually turn to dairy products in times of emotional distress. i absolutely eat my feelings, and i'm trying to avoid dairy products so my voice doesn't do anything weird. really it drives home just how much of my diet is dairy-influenced, because i looked in the fridge, and the cupboard and there's like nothing that won't screw over my efforts. super frustrating, but part of coping with my anxiety is actively controlling variables that could lead to increasing it. like screwing up my voice and hitting a note wrong and everything spiraling (internally) into "i'm such a huge disappointment to everyone, why do i even try?" because i'm aware i don't suck. i just sometimes need to remind myself.

i sometimes wonder if my OCD manifested to deal with the heightened levels of anxiety my brain thinks i should be dealing with ALL THE TIME. like the world is a chaotic seething mass of entropy, but if i keep all my things at perfect 90 degree angles and arranged chromatically maybe it's not so bad. if i chew the same number of bites on each side of my mouth and collect a whole line of toys or books (even when i only like one part) maybe everything is neater and i've made the world better? like i'm aware that it doesn't make sense, but again, it's small things i can control, so i guess it's not the worst way i could cope (though i'd probably be too anxious to even try out the worse things).

my compromise breakfast is cinnamon-sugar toast and hot cocoa (that has no actual dairy content in it being super cheap powdered stuff). it's not doing much for my nerves, but at least i won't be like super starving. xD no tummy rubles to be picked up by the microphone.

i don't like the cold. i thought about just posting that and nothing else, but i guess i can do better. xD

like i know i don't get cold as easy as some of my siblings, but i really hate being cold. it just depresses me and makes me not wanna do anything, and it also makes all kinda of otherwise manageable pain flare up in my terrible old-lady joints. for the most part i haven't had to go out in the way too cold, but the dog does have needs, so i have braved it a few times.

mostly i've been sitting inside playing fun distracting things with the heater running so i can pretend the world outside isn't frozen. i've been working my way through Lego Batman 2 again. it's really fun and i love that it uses the scores from the Keaton Batman and Reeves Superman films in the soundtrack, but i can't play it for too long. something about it leaves me dizzy and nauseated. like almost motion-sick which is strange since i've never reacted that way to any other video game, even though i know it's possible because Mario Galaxy and Rocket Slime both made Kyu motion sick when he's never had issues with it before. really i just have to limit myself, one or two missions, or running as many close-together side quests as i can in one go.

Kyu did make it to the grocery store for a few things today, so i've had hot chocolate to drink since i got up. i love hot chocolate, like i could drink it year round. i have drunk it in 100+ degree weather, i don't even care, i love it. it tastes a bit odd with chicken taquitos though. XD

really though the only notable thing other than the weather and the gaming is that my phone's acting up. it decided yesterday to tell me when i get a text, but refuse to let me read it. instead of loading, it'll freeze for a few minutes and reboot itself. then still not let me read the stupid message. really i have no idea what's wrong, because it'll let me view older messages, just nothing new. i still have e-mail and facebook and other options though if anyone needs to reach me, so yeah. xD

i had a good thanksgiving week. not a whole lot has happened that's worth talking about, but i'm continuing to take small steps in my efforts to figure out acting like a normal person.

i've been thinking about painting again, because it is something i love to do. i have a few ideas i'm mulling, but also i have to do some shuffling of supplies to get my painting stuff back within easy reach, so i guess there's time to figure out the bits i'm still not sure on. this all sounds super vague, but there's not much to say about it until i have something done and i can really let it speak for itself.

so i kinda watch a lot of tv. not usually when it's actually on tv, but binge-watching a whole series, or multiple seasons in the course of a few days. generally speaking, i've enjoyed most Joss Whedon programs i've watched, though my enjoyment never reaches any kind of fanaticism. i liked Buffy, Angel and Firefly well enough. honestly really loved Dr Horrible, and the Avengers was amazing. i think overall he's a pretty good writer, and for the most part i'm willing to give him a shot when i hear about a new project, though i never blindly throw myself into any of them.

Dollhouse was one show i actually made an effort to keep up with while it was on tv, becasue i knew going in that Fox likes to cancel things that look financially risky, (especially his things- the Firefly effect) and i enjoyed it. i never reccommend it to people because it's actually so hard to boil down the plot for simplicity. i wasn't sure if i was enjoying it for the first several episodes, and the plot was layered and handed out so slowly that i didn't really have any idea of the actual plot until it was season 2 and they had to time-skip and wrap everything up. Kyu's seen probably half the episodes simply because he was home when i was watching it, but he didn't like it and therefore didn't pay much attention to it.

it's a dark show with themes of power and abuse and choice running all over the place through it, and anytime a phrase is repeated, whether by one character or multiple, it's a safe bet that it has something to do with control of their mental state. we see a doll's control tightened: their handler asks "do you trust me?" and their programmed response "with my life" shores up the programmed personality. we see a character fall into madness repeating to himself "i know what i know" before he pulls (more or less) together and sacrifices himself to save lives. we see multiple times after a doll is wiped post-mission "did i fall asleep?" the answer is inevitably "for a little while" this is followed by a similar series of events that focus on "should i go now?" and "if you like" granting the illusion of agency to the empty bodies. there are other control words, but these are the big ones that really make an impact on the overall story.

this lays the foundation for my watching SHIELD. a Whedon project that ties into another Whedon project, with not-terribly-famous, but skilled actors and humor and drama scattered through. for the most part it's been a relatively lighthearted show (especially contrasted with the other two shows i'm keeping up with: Sleepy Hollow- hello apocalyptic things, and Elementary- murderers everywhere). last week's episode i was into and enjoying, until i completely freaked at the end when Coulson was dreaming about Tahiti. the instinctive reply of "it's a magical place" EVERY TIME it's metioned twigged me already, see the repetitive phrasing training above, but i was okay until (in his dream) he woke up and asked "did i fall asleep?" and his masseuse replied "for a little while". i honestly screeched and flailed and pointed and had to explain why i was SO FREAKED OUT to the Kyu, who found it kinda normal and not phenomenally off-putting.

we've been batting Coulson Lives! theories back and forth all along; clone, Life Model Decoy, straight up magical revival, sciencey!revival, skrull duplicate with implanted memories, we've entertained any comic bookish explanation offered, and this is clearly a show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and not the one Dollhouse happened in, but i think i only made it through the stinger because the dream!conversation did derail and we had that Skye/Ward/May bit.. at least i think that was the end? i was kinda freaked out, so i may just be remembering that part as the end.

but yeah, SHIELD is actually a really good show, my total Dollhouse-PTSD fit aside, and anyone who'd been wondering it it's worth watching should definitely give it a shot.

huh, it's Sunday again already.i swear we just had one, but it's possible i'm losing time again. in any event, yesterday Kyu and i caught up on a week of television, then caught the Dr Who 50th Anniversary Special, which i really enjoyed. it wasn't perfect, but it was really entertaining.

lately people keep telling me that various shows are really good and i should be watching them, but i rarely enjoy recommended shows as much as people think i will. even with shows i like and keep up with i'm not the best at actual regular viewing. i'm also glad that my week doesn't revolve around plugging mysel;f into the tv anymore, i like watching three shows all on one night with Kyu, we both feel entertained, and we have 6 other evenings free to do whatever we want the rest of the week. sometimes it's two nights a week, but it's a system that works for us.

i'm still playing Pokemon X pretty regularly, but yesterday i took a break for tv and reading, and DQ9, and it was nice. the great thing about this one is there's no penalty (even a cosmetic one) for not playing the game. some games things happen whether you're there or not and taking a break leads to visible results, this pokemon's just like 'whatever, do what sounds like fun' and i like that. it bothered the crap out of me when i was playing Diamond/ Pearl/ Platinum and i'd take a day off and when i returned my badges were dull and needed to be shined. or in Animal Crossing, i'd take time off and the village would descend into chaos and be overrun with weeds. i totally don't need my games guilt-tripping me for not playing them more.

i guess i'm a few hours early today? which i think makes up for posting late Sunday last week. xD i'm still enjoying pokemon X (and Y too) but the obsessive drive to play every moment has indeed dialed back a good bit. i took a day off and started up Lego Batman 2 Friday, since Kyu bought it for my birthday, i just wanted to beat the first one before i started the second.

art-wise, i've been working on pokemon drawings that aren't part of the DRAW THEM ALL challenge. i spent last weekend, and Tuesday at knit night too, working on sketches for the field guide for the story i'm kinda writing for my character-based Pokemon Y play through. i want a sketch to accompany every post, and now i think i've got five done? there's a LONG way to go before that'll be ready for sharing.

i spent tonight cutting 11x15 watercolor paper sheets down to six 4x5 and two 3x5 rectangles each. the 4x5 will be for the DRAW THEM ALL challenge, the 3x5 will be for testing technique so i don't screw up the properly sized paper. xD i screwed up the first sheet and only got 4 4x5 out of it, so out of the whole pad i managed 178 good bits.. there's currently 718 pokemon, meaning i still need to cut down like 3 more 11x15 pads of watercolor paper. from what i've seen online, no one person has ever managed to complete this challenge without recruiting help. i don't have a time frame for completion, it's really just something i think will help me get used to drawing again, something other than fashion sketches.

i spent a few hours today drawing on the backing from the cut-down pad. i drew Rory's favorite evolutionary line because cute fluffy animals make everything better (and maybe i'll get around to shipping off it and some of the other art i've meant to share) the only picture i have is a shot from my cell phone because it's 5am and the apartment is too dark to forgo flash, but the flash glares off the markers i used. my cell phone can technically handle the light level, but fuzzed up the entire top row of the picture. *sigh*just pretend the art is all as sharp as the bottom row.

anyway Rory, this is for you! and eventually it'll make its way into your possession, like in a reasonable proximity and everything! xD

i said the pokemon haze had lifted but all weekend i thought it was the wrong day, so maybe not so much as i'd thought. xD it's Monday, but i've been feeling a day ahead, so i totally thought it was Tuesday when i got up. nope, that's tomorrow.

yesterday was interesting, i was feeling an intense urge to just get out of the apartment, so i asked Kyu to walk to the thrift store with me. we went to the one about a half hour walk away instead of the one a ten minute walk away, just for variety. in the end i didn't find anything though, so we detoured to the art store, where i bought a replacement red marker, and a detail brush suitable for faceups as i've been without one for some time now. i also bought a selection of photo-size (and smaller) canvases for doll-scale paintings. no idea just what i'll paint on them yet, but i've got time to figure it out.

we stopped for Chinese food on the way back home, and i realized just how odd it was that i'd left the apartment for more than just dog-walking for four days in a row. that doesn't sound like much, i know, but it feels like a real achievement. some days it's hard getting out of bed, much less through the front door, so four days of going places? awesome.

after two solid weeks i'm ready for a break from pokemon. my brain is still in that really nerdy space though, because i've returned my attention to something i devoted my self fanatically to some time ago: Sailor Moon.

it's hard to describe just what Sailor Moon as a series meant to me when i was younger without getting into why i needed it so much. there are things i got from it that i couldn't ind in any other program or story then. i can now, but the importance of finding them then still matters and most of my affection for the story is rooted in nostalgia. by no means do i think it was a pioneer visually, at times the animation was terrible, and there's a part in one of the books where a character was drawn with two elbows, it made it past editorial and through localization multiple times and still the error persists. basically, without getting into examples of things, Sailor Moon was the first thing to consistently tell me it was okay to be different, to want different things, that i wasn't less for being so or wanting other than what was expected.

it's a story i re-read every so often, and i'm looking forward to the new animation it's getting, because at times the old one is painful to watch. mostly though i've been thinking that i want dolls of the characters. not BJDs, which i don't have space for and would be hideously expensive. i've been looking into customizing fashion dolls. i learned how to do a custom Barbie ages ago (even if i never finished her, re-rooting hair is not something i enjoy), and i looked at the Monster High dolls because there's already a huge community dedicated to customizing them, but i think i found my answer in their sister series- Ever After High. it's still a pretty new line, but all i need is re-wigging and slight alterations to existing face paint if i go with them. and making their clothes, but that's the thing i most wanna do.

the best thing about customizing a MH/EAH doll is that i shouldn't need to re-root, they're basically compatible with the wigs made for Liv dolls, so slight styling is all really. it's not an immediate project, i'm still in the planning stage, but i've already listed which dolls are best suited to each sailor, and i'm reading up on the differences between painting and sealing resin vs vinyl. it's a very entertaining project thus far, and i've yet to spend a dime, so i imagine it'll only become more fun once i'm actually holding them and making changes.

in gen 1 i go with Grey, which is a compromise between his established names, Gary and Green.
for gen 2 i call him Golden, and name myself Sylvia, even though it's supposed to be the other way around.
gen 3 doesn't let you name your rival. in gen 4 the rival reminds me of Impulse (a Flash sidekick) so i name him Bart.

i totally thought it was still Saturday, which is why this is going up later than usual. i had a good birthday week, i saw mom Tuesday, Thursday was lunch with James then ice cream after work with Moose. Friday i had lunch with Michelle, then tagged along with her to our ward's Trunk or Treat. it was a pretty good time. of course i've still been playing Pokemon most of my waking hours too.

i got my queen bee costume pulled together in time and i wore it out. with the exception of one person guessing fairy godmother, it went over pretty well. i don't think i'm doing anything on actual-Halloween, so there's no need for much else costuming-wise.

really i've spent a week playing pokemon pretty much all the time i'm awake so i've got seriously nothing to talk about. still feeling pretty good.

Ho-Oh is the mascot for HeartGold, which is my favorite to play. Gen 2 gives you the best value really, with two regions of gyms to battle through, and the remakes make it even more awesome by being the only games where you can have ANY of the (at that point) existing 493 pokemon follow you around. it's freakin ADORABLE! so yeah, love me some HGSS, and since i let Kyu pick and he took SS for himself, HG all the way!

okay, so i LOVE the first two forms of this family so much that the goofy round puffy mess that Dragonite is is almost offensive to me. i NEVER let my Dragonair evolve into Dragonite, like i'd rather have my team marginally weaker than run one of these things. ugh. i suppose there are goofier designs, but the main issue i have with it is the bulky roundness of everything about it after the sleek designs of the prior forms.

gonna have to go with the one that's not senile or completely incompetent. seriously, disregarding the "are you a boy or a girl" they all ask for gameplay reasons, Professor Oak spends all his time doing a radio show, and can't remember his own grandson's name. Professor Elm is stumped by an egg, all "WHAT IS THIS THING AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?!" and in the remakes he's a little less idiotic, but he still got robbed by a teenager, and failed to do much of anything that mattered. Professor Birch is introduced to you as he's being chased by a WEAK wild pokemon and he can't get to his bag to use any of the 3 pokemon he has waiting, one of which YOU USE to rescue him. also, he depends on his kid to do anything notable relating to his career.

Professor  Rowan though, he says sensible things, he has an assistant, but actually does fieldwork! he's really the first professor to come across as even marginally intelligent, so really when he does something professor-y it seems even more amazing. (also i kinda suck at drawing dudes, sorry)

since my lest favorite story encounter was already covered, for this one i piked the one thing i HATE running into as a random encounter. in the wild a repel keeps away anything weaker than your lead pokemon for a given number of steps. while surfing the level range is wider so even with a repel there's a high likelihood of your level 20ish anything being ambushed by a level 30ish Tentacool and not being able to run. you don't generally wanna fight them either because water routes are HEAVILY populated with rival trainers and you don't wanna waste your moves in junk battles.

a good psychic can carry an otherwise lacking team through a good chunk of story in any pokemon game, and third gen gave us an option that didn't need trading to evolve to a useful level. plus it's a prettier design, and some of us are shallow and unashamed of their preference for pretty things.

i kinda didn't realize it was Sunday again already. haven't managed to sleep since i woke up Friday, just not very tired, which is a little troubling, but i've dealt with worse, so we'll see what happens.

i lost most of my weekend lurking the "pokemon xy" tag on tumblr reading all the awesome that people who could afford the games (and system too) are experiencing. it's entertaining, though admittedly not terribly productive at all. in between that, i dug out the boxes, shipping pillow-bags, Certificates of Authenticity, and spare human parts for my Soom Adamelli twins. it's preparation for finally getting around to selling them, since i've been unable to properly bond with them for years now. i've tried, they're just not meant for me i guess, no matter how much i enjoy their design aesthetic.

i also spent some time playing Lego Batman, which is still awesomely fun years later, but not very long gameplay-wise. really things have been pretty chill around here, not much to talk about.

i was a little sick last Monday, and it's thrown off my sleep patterns for the last few days. like i'm still doing my best to sleep at normal-people times (which has been an ongoing effort for the last month or so), but it's been less 11-6 (or whatever) and more 2am-noon which isn't what i'm wanting.

when i did sleep last night i had a dream of a vacation that inspired me to design a modular art-deco inspired showgirl(ish) concert performance costumes for a pop star's next tour, themed Queen of the Night. i actually vaguely remember a few of the designs (but not the pop star), but it was a strange dream. like that kind of hyper detailed world building where you kinda think, "wow brain, you've really been bored lately huh?" and it's too much of everything to be real. too much detail, too much color, too much sensation. interesting as hell though.

i dunno, now that my last challenge has wrapped there's no sense of immediacy to move on to something new yet. i'm thinking about my Halloween costume, but there's really not much left to do for it, and several weeks to go still. basically i just have to figure out shorts or a skirt for it, and dig my tiara out of the box of costuming things it's stored in, then i'll have everything on-hand. still no idea what i'll be doing for it, but it's my favorite holiday, so i definitely wanna do a costume.

the weather's been pleasantly cool the last few days, which means the AC's been left off and our apartment has hovered at a perfectly comfortable temp instead of shifting from frigid to stifling every few hours. it's been great. no idea if Kyu agrees since he's been working a con this weekend, but i've been comfy at least. xD
